3 Used Car Red Flags

Outstanding Recalls and/or Lack of Maintenance Records

Automotive recalls are issued by automakers, and many of these are issued because a defect exists that could compromise the car’s safety. There is no cost for having a recall item fixed, as it is always done at the automaker’s expense. Therefore, if the person who owned the car hasn’t had a recall taken care of, it may indicate they neglected other maintenance issues. You can find out if a car has had recalls issued by entering the VIN at safercar.gov. Once you know what recalls the car was subject to, you should ask the seller to provide proof they were taken care of. Additionally, the current owner should be able to provide you with receipts or records showing routine maintenance was regularly performed on the vehicle.

No Title or Bad Title

If the seller of a used car does not have a title for the car you want to buy-WALK AWAY! The car’s title proves who owns it and legally allows that person to sell it. Also be wary of any title that looks like it’s been tampered with, does not display a state seal, or has a VIN that does not match the one on the car. Lastly, make sure the name on the title matches the name of the seller. If you purchase a vehicle without a title, or with a fraudulent or stolen title, you may not be the rightful owner of the car.

Low Price

A low price may not seem like a red flag, but a price that’s significantly lower than other vehicles of the same make and model may indicate the seller is desperate to unload a problematic vehicle.

Of course, it is possible to find a high-quality used car at a ridiculously low price, but the odds of that being the case are slim. The more likely scenario is that the seller is hoping to distract potential buyers, keeping them from noticing other issues the vehicle has. Costly mechanic fees can eat up any potential savings quickly if the car you purchase is in need of major repairs. Therefore, it’s usually best to avoid used cars that are priced much lower than similar models.
