Are Winter Tires Worth the Investment?

Your new vehicle came equipped with high-quality, all-season tires. These will work well during most of the year, however their name is a misnomer. They aren’t really appropriate for all seasons. When the temperature nears freezing and the snowflakes begin to fall, there are significant advantages to having winter tires.

Testing All-Season Tires vs Winter Tires On Ice

During a recent test sponsored by Tire Rack, drivers were able to compare the capabilities of both all-season tires and winter tires while driving on ice. One of the most interesting things this test disclosed was that despite what many drivers believe, even an AWD vehicle will reach its limitations when driving in slush, snow, and ice when fitted with all-season tires.

Testing consisted of performing three different tasks while driving on ice: accelerating over a span of 60 feet, braking to stop from 12 mph, and maneuvering around a corner at 11 mph.

Acceleration Test

Since the AWD systems did much of the work, the results of the 60-foot acceleration portion of the test were similar. All-season tires came in at 3.7 seconds, while winter tires clocked in at 3.1 seconds. The difference was likely because the vehicle equipped with winter tires picked up speed more quickly, as the vehicle with the all-season tires experienced significant wheelspin off the line.

Braking Test

The braking portion of the test was where the winter tires significantly outperformed the all-season tires. Coming to a complete stop on ice, from 12 mph, resulted in a lot of ABS modulation for the all-season tires, with that vehicle stopping 57 feet after braking. The other vehicle’s ABS was able to perform much better, as the winter tires provide more grip on the ice, allowing that vehicle to come to a complete stop in just 34 feet. If winter tires make this much of a difference at 12 mph, imagine the impact they have at higher speeds.

Cornering Test

Consisting of a 90-degree turn, driving at a steady 11 mph, the car with all-season tires lost traction, plowing straight ahead, with the stability control system unable to change the course. However, the vehicle equipped with winter tires made the turn without losing any traction.

Cost vs. Benefit

There is no denying that the upfront costs of a second set of tires will put a dent in your wallet, however, there are other factors that should be considered. A second set of tires will lengthen the life of your all-season tires, your risk of becoming involved in an accident is greatly reduced, and by avoiding an accident, you won’t be responsible for an insurance deductible, which likely would offset any money you save by not purchasing winter tires.
