Check on the Following Car Parts Before Temperatures Drop

We’re not given to bragging, but at Hawk VW dealership in Frankfort we take pride in being the #1 volume Volkswagen dealer in Illinois based on 2018 retail sales. Two reasons for that are we always maintain a great inventory of both new and pre-owned VWs, and we have an outstanding maintenance department dedicated to keeping your vehicle in tip-top shape year-round.

With that in mind, here’s our checklist of vital parts that even non-mechanics can and should check to get your car ready for the coming winter.

Radiator cap

Small and inexpensive, this little part is critical to your car’s heating and cooling system. It keeps the cooling fluid where it needs to be and by pressurizing the system, it raises the boiling point of the coolant. To be safe, if your cap is several years old, replace it with a new one.

While you’re at it, use an antifreeze tester to make sure you have enough to protect your engine from freezing.

The minimum tread depth for safe handling is 3/32 of an inch. Turn a penny upside down and place it between the treads. If you can see the top of Lincoln’s head, replace your tires.

Also remember that tire pressure decreases in cold weather, and underinflated tires wear faster and hurt fuel economy. So, check tire pressure regularly during winter.

Lights and windshield wipers

Visibility is always crucial but especially during winter’s short days and long nights. Make sure all head and tail lights are working and clean the lenses. Install winter windshield wipers to handle the snow and ice and fill the windshield washer tank with deicing fluid.

Your car battery has to work harder in cold weather, and you don’t want a dead battery on a cold morning. Come by Hawk VW for a free battery and charging system check, and if you don’t drive regularly, try to start your car daily and let it idle for 10 minutes or so to recharge the battery.

Fuel injectors

Cold weather combined with water that may be in the fuel system can create winter problems. Add a fuel injector cleaner during a routine fill-up to help restore lost power and prevent hard starts.

Finally, remember for the very best service and selection of new and used Volkswagens, always come to Hawk VW dealership in Rockport.
